Fitness and nutrition have always been a staple in my life. As we head into 9 years in business, I’ve been lucky to have The Athlete Lab as my conduit for making incredible changes in others’ lives, as well as my own.

It all started in college. After my experiences with college basketball and rugby, came adventure racing, triathlons, group fitness instruction, weightlifting and more. Professionally, I was a firefighter for the city of St. Paul, MN, then turned to the health/medical field and obtained my Master’s Degree in Acupuncture at Northwestern Health Sciences University. Ultimately, I wanted to make a difference in peoples’ lives on a larger scale and founded The Athlete Lab in 2008. Over time, we expanded our catalog of servicesbroadening our range of offerings, to really help everyone who wants our help. We made it our mission to make health & fitness available to everyone. Our most important ingredient to success is that we’re Driven by Community and Fueled by Commitment.

Passionate about improving people’s lives, Coach Joe takes everyone’s progress personal. Joe believes in the potential of everyone, but also recognizes that coaches have a guiding impact upon every single athlete. Joe’s athletic background started in his early years. He grew up in Lindstrom, MN where he excelled in high school football and track, earning multiple all-conference accolades. After sustaining a career ending injury in college, Joe sought out a new sport to compete in. Finding CrossFit in 2011, he started his journey into functional fitness. His personal improvement became the conduit to continue his passions for helping others.

Joe began his coaching career in his hometown of Chisago, earning the trust to lead the strength and conditioning program in 2013 for middle and high school athletes (Mounds View High School) along with coaching CrossFit, Olympic Weightlifting, and personal training.

As Head Coach and lead programmer for our CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting programs, Joe strongly believes that living a healthy lifestyle through executing a high-quality nutrition plan and efficient exercise program will undoubtedly improve the quality of your life. Coach Marcus grew up in Connecticut, but went to high school in Rochester, MN, and graduated from Bethel University with a degree in Business Finance in 2013. After college, he worked as Project Manager of Expansion for Eagle Brook Church.

Marcus’ athletic roots go back to high school, where he was a two-sport athlete, playing baseball and basketball. In college, he exchanged competitive sports for an administrative role and became the director of Bethel University’s highly renowned intramural program. This set the course for his personal pursuit of fitness outside of sports. Marcus found a passion in strength and interval training. He discovered CrossFit in the Spring of 2013 and from the first workout it had him hooked for more. He quickly decided that his life’s mission is to coach others and help them improve their health and fitness. In 2015 he obtained his CrossFit Level 1 certification and has been coaching ever since. He added a USAW L1 Weightlifting certification to his arsenal and has since become our one of our lead coaches for our Olympic Lifting program.

Marcus is driven by teamwork, following the philosophy that we all learn from one another, and through it, we all become better.  “I love seeing the reward for individuals who turn deficiencies into efficiencies for their daily life” Marcus, said. “Outside of coaching I love to eat. I’ve always straddled the line between training to eat and eating to train. Thankfully I’ve learned a thing or two about nutrition along the way.”

Coach Andee is a multi-faceted athlete. She was a competitive swimmer through high school in Wisconsin until she “retired” at the age of 18. Andee then found long-distance running, triathlons, Tough Mudders or RAGNAR, looking to quench her thirst for fitness, competition, and community…and then she found CrossFit in November of 2013. Andee’s life is defined by the first rule of CrossFit “…always talk about CrossFit.” As someone who makes a living in the fitness industry and loves to compete, CrossFit was a perfect fit for her.

Andee has competed in local and regional CrossFit competitions and found success in team and individual events. Andee and her team qualified for the 2015 CrossFit Regionals in Columbus, where only the best teams of the region are invited to compete. 

Beyond the joy she gets through competing, CrossFit has helped Andee find a new place in her personal life in which she has finally found peace with her long-term body image and eating issues. Andee changed her outlook and is a representation of a strong woman who has overcome her own obstacles. At The Athlete Lab, Andee is one of our coaches whom our members look to for competition and nutrition advice. She coaches CrossFit classes and the Bootcamp Challenge, knowing how important it is to start with the right set of technical guidance and emotional support. Megan, B.S

Coach Megan is one of the prominent faces, mostly coaching the early morning classes. Megan is turbo-charged between the front-desk, merchandise area, coaching classes and taking care of some of the back-end systems. Megan is a highly skilled and proven gymnast, with gymnastic coaching experience, who seems to have found a way to redefine gravity. Isaac Newton is scratching his head.

Although Megan used to be a gymnastics competitor, she knows that the majority of our members are wanting to work on their overall fitness, rather than desire to get to competition levels. She coaches classes with a hawk’s eye, correcting techniques, while encouraging everyone to move at their best. When she isn’t coaching, Megan is a mom to two amazing boys and also stays busy with real estate. In case you’re pregnant, just ask Megan what her experiences were while working out during her pregnancy, and how quickly she ‘bounced back’ afterward!

Coach Tim, a business banker by day and AIM/CrossFit coach by night, started ‘drinking the CrossFit kool-aid about 3 years ago. Tim’s first experiences with CrossFit were almost accidental, as he was looking for a gym in his neighborhood in Santa Monica, CA. His first workout left him challenged enough to know that he must return and conquer what seemed to be out of his reach. Tim quickly found out that consistent work will propel you forward and his open-hearted attitude soon led him to start interning as a part-time coach.

Tim’s professional journey led him back to Minnesota, where he joined The Athlete Lab and soon became one of our newest coaches. Since his return, he has effortlessly moved through our interning program and is a regular leading our AIM classes. Stop on in and chat with Tim about functional fitness or golf…just make sure you have a clear calendar for the rest of the day. 😉

Event Management “The Blizzard Bowl”

Although Michael is co-coaching TAL’s “Bootcamp” with Coach Kate, he is mostly working on the operational side of the business, vendor relations, TAL’s branding, and orchestrates most of the organization’s communications & social media, and PR. In 2015, he had the idea for “The Blizzard Bowl” and through combined forces with all TAL coaches, the Twin Cities first large CrossFit competition of every calendar year, takes place in January. “The Blizzard Bowl” sets the tone for the “CrossFit Open”, providing athletes with an opportunity to gauge their progress through the off-season.

When he’s not engaged with Kate on the operational or coaching side of TAL or TBB, Michael is the founder of a start-up company. Symbiotic Communications specializes in Employee Engagement Solutions/Corporate Cultural Responsibility and Business Continuity/Emergency Management Planning. Michael is also found as Subject Matter Expert and Speaker on all of these subjects. He volunteers as a mentor, lending his experience to start-up operators through SCORE St. Paul.

All of our services are the products of years of experience, diligent service to our community and have been built with the feedback of hundreds of athletes, thousands of sessions coached, individual athlete meetings, focus groups, continued education and the undying conviction that we are doing ‘the right thing for the right reasons’ – to improve our communities, one member at a time.
We won’t stop here, though. We continue to observe, study, learn and inquire on how we can get better, what else we need to do and whether we’re missing anything. Join us on our journey as we’d love to join on yours.
